The ScarletApps platform allowed individuals with minimal technical background to manage and improve the website without having to directly modify the website's HTML code. The project began when the previous site for a student organization, the Rutgers University Seeing Eye Puppy Raising Club (RUSEPRC), became unsuitable to update or modify without drastic changes to HTML code. Since most club members had limited or no knowledge of coding in HTML, each year the webmaster would have to learn HTML before being able to modify the site. In addition, the HTML user interface for modifying the website had not been updated since 2003, further complicating the process for simple updates. A new website was developed in the ScarletApps system which was more user-friendly for the webmaster to update the site. In addition, new improvements that the old site could not support, such as photo slideshows, YouTube videos, downloadable documents, and an interactive calendar were added to the new site. After seeking approval of the site from the University’s Technology Office, the new website was renamed and the old site links were forwarded to the new site. Within 8 months of the site’s release, two other student organizations had begun work on similar ScarletApps sites based on the RUSEPRC model. Show less
