Gabriel Duncan Email and Phone Number
As a sophomore in high school, I had the opportunity to attend the New York International Air Show in August 2019. This event featured historic cargo and bomber planes, commercial airliners, and helicopters that were grounded and put on display. What really caught my attention, however, were the performances of some of the most prominent defense jets of the modern sky, including the technically unparalleled Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II and the dominant Boeing F/A-18 Blue Angels. Witnessing the unforgettable power, speed, and design of these aircrafts captivated me, causing my interest in aerospace to flourish. Since then, I have striven to pursue a career dedicated to producing innovation and sustainability in the realm of engineering. Now as a Mechanical Engineering major at the University of Connecticut, I have shown my capability to make this pursuit a reality. Besides achieving academic success in relevant courses such as calculus, physics, thermodynamics, and fluid dynamics, and I have enriched my collegiate life by becoming a member of the UConn Formula SAE competitive racing team. This once-in-a-lifetime experience has allowed me to apply my knowledge and passion for engineering in a compelling, real world environment. As a team, we spend numerous hours collaborating to optimize the cost efficiency, design, manufacturing feasibility, and performance for both an Internal Combustion and an Electric Vehicle race car. By promoting an engaging atmosphere that encourages individual and collective ingenuity, Formula SAE has offered me exciting challenges, pushing me to enhance my communication, project development, manufacturing, and software skills. In addition to my current involvement at UConn, I look forward to pursuing research on the potential implementation of hydrogen fuel cell use for aircraft propulsion with a grant funded by my Presidential Scholarship at UConn. I hope to gain insight on the practicality of this hydrogen usage, as it may offer a more eco-friendly and energy-efficient fuel option to the aerospace industry.
