Primarily advising the Ministry of Municipal Affairs, the Housing Ministry, and the Athletic Commissioner of British Columbia.

As a member of this section, I provide legal advice to the Department of Alberta Environment and Parks. The nature of this advice varies considerably, as I work both as a solicitor, and counsel at Administrative Law proceedings. As a solicitor, I provide legal advice relating to contracting and procurement matters, legislative amendments, and general policy development. I have also developed a focus in the area of privacy law, and provide legal advice relating to the application of Alberta’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. As counsel in Administrative proceedings, I have focused my practice in the area of regulatory compliance, and provide assistance to decision makers in the execution of enforcement tools under Alberta’s environmental legislation, and in the making of written and oral representations before Administrative bodies.

As in-house counsel with the Office of the Auditor General, my chief responsibility was to directly support the Auditor General and his staff in carrying out their audit work and reporting to the Legislative Assembly. These responsibilities included an analysis of Legislative compliance by audited entities, a review of the scope of audits in relation to the mandate of the Auditor General, responding to disclosures from public service employees and members of the public, and the provision of general legal advice on a broad and complex range of public law topics. As in-house counsel, I was also required to provide legal advice to the Office of the Auditor General. This advice included the vetting of contracts, assisting in the retention of agents, provision of advice during the development of human resources policies and procedures, the management of confidential and private information, and the provision of general legal advice to office management.

Working in the Aboriginal Law Section of the Federal Department of Justice, my duties were primarily associated with the litigation of large, extensive, and complex files. These duties included, but were not limited to, the drafting of risk assessments, production of legal opinions, preparation of questions for discoveries, conducting client interviews and overall management of document production. While at the Department of Justice, I also had an opportunity to work in the Public Safety, Defense and Immigration Section. Within this section I had sole conduct of a number of smaller files which focused on immigration law, personal injury litigation, debt collection, and the management of fatality inquiries.

In this role, I worked with Justice counsel and environmental policy advisors in preparing intended amendments to relevant Acts and Regulations, for presentation to the Legislature. Key responsibilities included ensuring that all legislative process timelines were met, and that all subject matter experts were allowed sufficient time to provide input into legislative changes.
