I have been working on two projects:The first is creating a mass-fabrication compatible platform for molecular electronics. In short, electronic circuits based on transport through molecules can provide the hardware for new computing paradigms. But so far, such devices could not be made with current industrial techniques. I was able to solve this issue and the results will be published next month in a top tier journal.The second project is a collaboration with a biochemistry group, for whom we provide microfluidic devices to create and manipulate small (20 um, or ~ one hair diameter) water droplets in oil. Goal of the project is screening protein libraries for the enhancement of catalytic properties, my contribution is the micro-fluidic hardware. Using state-of-the-art fabrication, I was able to reduce the voltages involved in the manipulation by an order of magnitude. Our chip-setup interface, 3-D printed, is also much more user-friendly and can use thumbnail sized chips, making the solution more cost-effective.

I was awarded a National Center of Competence and Research (NCCR) Quantum Systems and Information Technology Directors Fund Grant to collaborate with Christian Schoenenbergers Group on the microwave properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes. This work continues the integration of carbon nanotubes into microwave impedance matching circuits to obtain more bandwidth for increased sensitivity in the measurements. More broadly, it was also a knowledge transfer project and was successfully concluded with a Nature Communications Paper.

Using the tools and methods developed during my PhD, we now integrate single-walled carbon nanotubes instead of single molecules into the microwave circuits. This should enable an investigation of the GHz frequency properties of such devices.
