I am first-year otolaryngology/ENT resident, interested in medical device design, in particular cochlear implants (CIs) and objective measurement of CI performance after implantation. My relevant experience in medical devices includes a project in which my colleagues and I prototyped an inexpensive, postoperatively-adjustable thyroplasty implant for patients with unilateral vocal cord paralysis. I am currently researching deficits in binaural hearing, or the ability to process sounds from both ears, that are observed in listeners with CIs. My colleagues and I are exploring behavioral and neurophysiologic measures of psychoacoustic phenomena, such as release from listening effort, that depend on binaural hearing. Our subject population is CI listeners with single-sided deafness (SSD-CI), and the goal of this work is to develop novel clinical tools to assess CI outcomes that complement traditional hearing tests, guiding individualized perceptual training for CI listeners.
