I am a PhD candidate in Doug Fowler's lab at University of Washington, defending my dissertation in Sept. 2023. I am interested in developing technologies to improve personalized medicine, especially in drug treatment. My thesis work is composed of two projects. First, I am using deep mutational scanning to investigate how all possible single amino acid variants affect CYP450 liver enzyme metabolism, which can dramatically affect effective and safe drug dosing. Second, I am developing a technique to apply mass spectrometry proteomics to visually distinct subpopulations of drug-treated cells. I am interested in understanding how and why not all cells respond to a chemotherapeutic drug even though they are a clonal population. Understanding the link between morphology and molecular state during drug treatment could reveal why some patient tumors respond to treatment while others do not. In my next career stage, I am eager to apply my knowledge in synthetic biology and high throughput methodologies in genomics and proteomics to create novel therapeutics, improve accessibility to existing therapies, and expand our mechanistic knowledge of human disease.
