In the midst of a budgetary crises, the Oakland Unified School District Board has recently voted for the closure of 5 Oakland schools including Lakeview Elementary. This decision has sparked an outcry in the community of concerned teachers, parents, students, and activists. Lakeview is a diverse school set in a beautiful urban area on the shores of Lake Merritt. This location serves as a sanctuary for many students traveling in from poverty struck neighborhoods around the city of Oakland. While it is heartbreaking to see the burden of a failed education system placed on our young children it is the intention of the Lakeview Garden Project to offer a reflection of the needs of our community and the tools to repair a collapsing system. The importance of diversity, a healthy environment, and resource management are all key elements of a successful school system. The same could be said for a successful garden. In this world of interconnectedness, the garden is a place to learn life science tools that will enable our children to see positive solutions in the struggle of everyday life.
