About Gabriel E. Ortiz Rivera
A fifth year student at the University of Puerto Rico - Mayagüez pursuing a Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering. During my undergraduate studies, my goal has always been to gain as much practical experience as I can to apply it in projects, such as Project AV and AeroDesign, that seek to solve complex engineering problems. This has led me to my internships at NASA Ames where I worked in the Rotorcraft Aeromechanics Branch. My goal is to eventually work in the field of aerospace engineering and support the design of technologies that will benefit humanity and future generations.

Robotic Arm Designer | Project Av
Student-led design team that aims to design and manufacture the first rover and robotic arm with the goal of being the first team in Puerto Rico and UPRM to compete in the University Rover Challenge in the Summer 2024.-Redesigned a robotic arm using SolidWorks and reduced its weight from 12kg to 8kg.-Designed a modular base for the robotic arm that will connect with the rover's chassis and communicated with my team mates from the Design Division to ensure that this base can fit and does not afect the rest of the vehicle's design.-Performed FEA of the arm's components using SolidWorks and ensured each component had a minimum safety factor of 2.
Vlrcoe Research Intern
Summer 2023 - Aeromechanics Intern
-Analyzed current drone models that utilize a single-rotor configuration and determined what technological gaps must be addressed in firefighting drones.-Calculated the durability of a liquid cooling system that implements the use of ice packs as a heat absorption material.-Assisted in the 3D printing of components part of a scaled down urban air mobility (UAM) model and with the testing of a helicopter flight simulator
Spring 2023-Aeromechanics Intern
-Improved the design of a single rotor drone that will carry 23kg of payload to assist wildfire operations.-Optimized the structural design of the drone by implementing weight reductions on the CAD models and selecting lightweight composites and alloys, successfully reducing its weight by around 4kg.-Validated the structural design of each component using SolidWorks finite element analysis (FEA) and ensured each had a minimum safety factor of 5.
L'Space Nasa Proposal Writing And Evaluation Experience (Npwee)
L'Space Mission Concept Academy
Worked in a multidisciplinary team of 8 other students to design a Mission Concept of a martian cave exploration mission and write a Preliminary Design Review (PDR). Designed the subsystems and payload integration of a quadruped robot capable of traversing rough and steep Martian terrain.
Aircraft Performance Engineer
Worked in the selection process of the Advanced Class aircraft's wing and fuselage by analyzing different airfoil designs. Worked in the aircraft's dimensioning process to validate and test the design with the goal of competing in the SAE Aero Design 2023 competition.
