I served as a Patient Advocate for the Sickle Cell Association of Texas - Marc Thomas Sickle Cell Foundation from Spring of 2001 to Spring of 2010, in that time I started my tenure as a Poster Child, doing many speaking engagements with many public health officials, healthcare experts, and engaged with many patients with sickle cell anemia like myself. In that time as I progressed more into my role as a Patient Advocate I assisted in helping get the “Let’s Break the Sickle Cycle: Fund Sickle Cell Disease Research, Treatment and Education” program request before the president on March 30th 2009, culminating in an exclusive White House Oval Office invitation where I along with others at the SCDAA met former President Barack Obama. Our efforts along with many others culminated in getting “H.Con.Res.186 - Supporting the goals and ideals of Sickle Cell Disease Awareness Month” agreed to in both the House and Senate on Oct 1st, 2009.

I was introduced into this role while serving as a Patient Advocate for the Sickle Cell Disease Association of Texas-MTSCF. I applied through our organization and was selected after a few months long interview processes. During my tenure at the SCDAA around October of 2007, I met former President Bill Clinton in an official capacity on the organizations behalf. We discussed congressional support for funding research and our efforts to help reform public policy, patient services, and public awareness.
