Designed to assist students employ different communications strategies to maximize understanding by others, the Writing Center provided unique way to reach students beyond the classroom. As part my teaching responsibilities, I was involved in the design and implementation of various workshops committed to teaching undergraduate students various dimensions of creative expression and writing. Workshop topics included the use of online media as a way to communicate ideas, plagiarism and academic integrity, and citation basics in academic writing. These experiences made me appreciate the diversity of students within a large environment such as Michigan State University, and compelled me to think critically about the positives and negatives of my own teaching style. Working with students from different national and linguistic backgrounds was especially useful; the experience highlighted the importance of patience and continuous communication, and illustrated the courage of students as they introduced me (a stranger) to their writings. Taken together, I learned how to create an environment that facilitates trust between adviser and student. Show less
