I am an interdisciplinary educator, artist, and researcher; communication is central to my work. I have accrued over 20 years experience teaching and developing curricula for higher education; ten years as a grassroots organizer, and five as a freelance journalist and grantwriter. Through my creative activity, I have participated in diverse forms of performance, published poetry, fiction and non-fiction, as well as serving in a wide range of production roles from technical director to artistic director. My research on the use of performance to support social and environmental activism connects the fields of eco-criticism, environmental history, labor history, history of technology and history of science. Most recently, my academic research has linked performance theory with my own experiments with site specific-performance, focusing on issues of embodiment and experience of place. I am committed to engaged research and inclusive practice, as well as to traditional approaches to research and writing. I have worked extensively with dancers, spoken word artists and musicians as well as actors, specializing in developing original material and exploring non-traditional approaches to staging, such as interactive theatre, site-specific performance, non-narrative/multi-disciplinary performance, and street performance: all of which potentially complicate audience/performer relationships and genre-based expectations. Before earning a PhD in Performance Studies, I enjoyed a career as a scenic artisan on the regional theatre circuit. Since leaving University of Alaska, Anchorge, I have worked as a community outreach organizer and grantwriter while developing applied theater projects through Spontaneous Co-Motion.
