About Gabrielle Simard
Hi! I am a laboratory technician at the University of Toronto Scarborough, working in the Integrative Agroecology Lab; Isaac Lab. I have also received an Honours bachelor of science in molecular biology, and immunology, with a passion for understanding the interactions between soil, plants, and microbes. My core competencies include soil and plant sample processing, soil DNA extraction, green roof and campus farm maintenance, and international soil handling and disposal protocols. In my current role, I perform various soil and plant analyses, such as permanganate oxidizable carbon, carbon-nitrogen, soil texture, and soil organic matter measurements. I also use ImageJ and Whin-rhizo software to measure leaf area and root scanning and imaging. Additionally, I assist with fieldwork travel to local Ontario farms participating in the CANOVI project, which aims to improve vegetable breeding and production. I have also worked as a research assistant in the Andrade Lab, where I cared for and handled different spider species, and managed fruit fly populations. Through these experiences, I have developed skills in laboratory techniques, data management and analysis, and animal care. I am motivated by the opportunity to contribute to scientific discoveries that can enhance environmental sustainability and human health. I can bring diverse perspectives and experiences to the team, as I have a background in gymnastics coaching and working with children, peers, and in a team setting.
