The Innovations for Peace and Development Undergraduate Research Fellowship is a paid opportunity for undergraduate students at the University of Texas at Austin to gain experience researching international development and peacekeeping issues. As a part of the Individuals in International Policymaking team, responsibilities include, collecting data, participating in bi-weekly research training sessions to improve skills in statistical programs including R and Stata, and conducting preparative work for qualitative fieldwork. The goal of the Individuals in International Policymaking team is to examine staffing policies in international institutions, culminating in an international conference in Spring 2025 including representatives from a variety of international institutions.

Working as a research assistant to Dr. Toyin Falola, I’ve gained a familiarity with the geography, ethnic demography, and conflicts on the African continent that inform my future research goals to combat disinformation, encourage infrastructure reform, and develop stronger atrocity prevention mechanisms on the continent. Since I began my research job, I’ve worked with texts relating to African political structures, religious trends, and economic developments, which I use to understand the contextual exigence of the issues the continent currently faces. This has led to my increased fascination with world history and the various global networks that interact on the African continent, which continues to motivate my specialization in African studies.

Traveling abroad with the Japan-America Student Conference as an American Delegate was an incredibly rewarding experience. With my fellow American and Japanese delegates, I worked in a cohort-based environment through linguistic and cultural barriers to discuss current global issues and the US-Japan relationship.
