I love telling stories. Growing up, I journaled and wrote fairy tales in composition books with fraying seams and dog-eared pages. I filled my mind with stories of characters in books, figures in history and people I met. As a Michigan State undergraduate student, I channeled this passion into studying journalism. I get the opportunity to learn about people in my community and share their stories. I believe that sharing stories can connect people. Minoring in global studies, I’ve expanded my knowledge about diverse perspectives and cultures. I apply this in journalism by pursuing stories that represent a diverse population. I practice “Fair Chance Reporting” by recording the demographics of the people I interview to hold myself accountable in covering a population fairly. As an intern, I reported for the non-profit news organization Bridge Michigan. As a student, I wrote for the Spartan Newsroom and the college radio station Impact 89FM. I’ve done undergraduate research about global slums and inequality and presented my research at the Michigan State’s 2022 University Undergraduate Research and Arts Forum, which won first place in its category.
