Shortly after announcing his candidacy, I joined Obama for America when Senator Obama was polling in the single digits and—over a period of 20 months, helped grow our online organizing presence then led four victorious state efforts. This experience culminated with the the launch of the Pennsylvania team where I was the first on the ground and tasked with building the operation. As General Election Director, I had responsibility for a $8.8 million budget and, along with a talented core team, built 4 departments and scaled a staff of 450 full-time people operating in 81 officesPennsylvania was a battle; as Campaign Manager David Plouffe writes in his book about the 2008 election, "At the end, McCain's camp decided to throw everything they could into Pennsylvania.....the night before the election, our last poll in Pennsylvania showed our lead slipping to just four points." But, our team, who had worked tirelessly since the summer, didn't flinch; our volunteers knocked on 1 million doors per day in the final stretch and as Plouffe recounts to end his book "all the networks called Pennsylvania when the polls closed at 8:00PM--a devastating rebuke to McCains' last-gasp Pennsylvania strategy."
