In our term of office the Works Council consisted of 10 elected employees of the Port of Rotterdam and as a nearly fulltime Chairman I was their figurehead. We played an important role in the decision-making process, e.g. by advising the management on intended investment decisions. Also we have put diversity & inclusivity back on the agenda and we have made significant progress in the professionalization and modernization of employee participation within the Port of Rotterdam. Oranjewoud Legal's objective was to provide in-house legal consultancy to our co-workers (engineers, planners, urban planners and more). However this did not work out well: because most of our team members were too often employed at our clients, we did not succeed in gaining a foothold within Oranjewoud. E.g. At the City Development department of the municipality of Dordrecht my assignments included liquidating a regional public-public partnership for caravan centers, foreclosing a local discotheque and the pre-bankruptcy purchase of a horse riding school.I learned quite a bit here about advising, decision-making and most of all about achieving results by implementing your own plan. This was very satisfying and a good preparation for my next move to the Port of Rotterdam.
