I have worked extensively in the Doncaster and Sheffield offices on The Star, Doncaster Free Press, Sheffield Telegraph, South Yorkshire Times, and Epworth Bells. It was a fast-paced, multimedia role, which meant I was just as comfortable filming, scripting and editing video reports as I was writing and uploading hard news and features. I was a trained video specialist for the South Yorkshire region. After Newsroom of the Future was introduced, I spent most of my time in court and covered such varied cases as the Hillsborough inquests, the Simon Holdsworth murder trial and the Alan Barnfield Shetland pony sex assault trial. Feature writing was also a passion. My work included an exclusive about 84-year-old Irene Hancock, a lady who had fostered 256 children in her lifetime. Following publication she was honoured with a Sheffield Civic Award.

I juggled my time between six diverse clients, from a leading UK law firm to a fish foot spa company. Tasks included managing social media accounts, communicating with Sheffield business leaders, planning future campaigns, co-ordinating interviews and writing press releases.

The Chronicle is Yorkshire’s best-selling weekly newspaper with a readership of about 138,000 at the time. I wrote for the Hoyland edition and helped out with the paper’s other editions when required. Out of the Chronicle’s seven editions mine was the best performing of 2010, being the only one where sales actually increased in the economic downturn. I was also heavily involved in the Chronicle’s online output and regularly filmed, presented and edited video reports for the web.
