As an engineer, it's my job to ensure that whatever I design meets multiple criteria. It must be safe, functional, cost-effective, easy to build and maintain, readily available, and even look good. There are many forms of manufacturing to juggle to achieve this between weldments, sheet metal, piping, fasteners, plastics, paint, and material types. The list goes on and on. Whenever I design something new or am looking at product improvements from an ECO I get input from the experts. The technicians putting it together know best what's a problem and what's a breeze. Purchasers know which vendors have short lead times and which ones are difficult. I can't always promise I will use the best solution, but considering others' expertise and opinions makes them part of the solution as well.Speaking with all these people give me insight. I can learn something new every day which helps make me a better engineer. Telling the other person why I'm asking includes them in the conversation and gives them insight into my thinking. Problems are not solved in a vacuum and I love working with people to design the best possible system.
