The Johns Hopkins Hospital Emergency Department sees almost 70,000 patients a year. Designated a Level I Trauma Center and Cardiac Interventional Center, we are the regional pediatric trauma center and eye trauma center for the State of Maryland. Our emergency practitioners provide innovative, collaborative and compassionate patient care. With dynamic programs in disaster medicine, hyperacute medicine, tactical medicine, infectious disease surveillance & response, and critical event preparedness and response the Department of Emergency Medicine is a leading force in clinical care, teaching and research both nationally and internationally.

Disaster Medical Assistance Teams (DMAT) are deployable teams of healthcare professionals organized to provide rapid-response medical care or casualty decontamination during a terrorist attack, natural disaster, or other incident in the United States or abroad. The Maryland DMAT is a member of the National Disaster Medical System within the US Department of Health and Human Services. The team consists of 65 physicians, healthcare professionals, support staff and logistics personnel that are deployed to disaster sites and high profile events to establish mobile hospitals, aid stations and medical response teams.

The National Center for Preparedness and Catastrophic Event Response (PACER) at Johns Hopkins University. PACER is a Department of Homeland Security grant-funded National Center of Excellence for the study of Preparedness and Catastrophic Event Response. A consortium consisting of fourteen universities and eight professional associations and government organizations with extensive research and development infrastructure, PACER funds $21MIL in research to study how our nation can best prepare for and respond to large-scale incidents and disasters.

The Department of Operations Integration is the internal consultancy group helping Johns Hopkins identify, capture, and achieve operational and strategic improvement opportunities. The department advances organizational performance by utilizing a systems approach to analyzing processes, building relationships and facilitating change. Operations Integration staff lead or facilitate organizational efforts for business and clinical process improvement, change management, systems redesign and integration, and solutions development. The department's scope is clinical, administrative, financial, and logistical in nature with operational and strategic projects that encompass outpatient and inpatient operations
