As a literacy specialist and parent, I am more than aware of the need for children to own books- new books! If something is important, you have it in your life. But what if wonderful stories are not part of your world? I have launched a non-profit called Bree's Book Bus. The purpose is to provide free books to children living in 'book deserts'. Those places where libraries have closed & books stores have never opened. Access to books can help open up the world to children. Plus my golden retriever, Bree, drives the bus! Please consider following this 501 (c)(3) recognized charity. I provide professional development you and your teachers will actually want to attend! With almost 40 years of teaching & coaching experience (in every grade level) I know how challenging it can be to actually implement change (see my profile for more information). But what if you had someone to help you ensure meaningful changes occur in your school or district? Dog With A Bone Educational Consultants offers school districts, charter schools, and private early childhood centers with a wide range of services including year-long intensives, professional development, and evaluation of both early childhood & reading programs. We focus on instructional coaching, coaching coaches, reading evaluations, and professional development for teachers, administrators, and parents. New this year is our focus on bringing joy back into the classroom. Too many teachers are desperately unhappy in their classrooms. This not only affects each teacher, but it has a negative impact on our children. Ask us how to bring joy back to teaching and see everyone's happiness increase!Gail is also becoming certified as a yoga teacher! She is offering yoga for special need's children in the central NJ area!
Enhancing literacy practices in local school districts by coaching teachers in order to improve student achievement.
I was initially hired to take grades K-3 (later K-5) from a whole group instructional model reliant on workbooks to a balanced literacy model. After training a cadre of new literacy coaches & reading specialists, we began making changes as we supported teachers & administrators. Guided reading, assessment to drive instruction, tiered intervention, word work, and more were implemented. The next challenge was to take the district from a half-day Pre-K program to a full-day model. With a large low-income population and a high number of English language learners, I knew we needed a program that addressed these issues but was also developmentally appropriate. The teachers chose Tools of the Mind as our new curriculum & I added 3 full-time early childhood coaches. Ongoing and embedded professional learning enabled us to successfully add more than 11 classrooms that met the needs of our children. This was in part due to our focus on executive functioning skills along with the power of play. Little ones learn through play and social interactions (Vygotsky) not electronic devices. The coaching model I instituted with all grade levels was student-centered, rather than teacher-centered. The key to coaching is establishing relationships. This is something that is virtually impossible with a "What is the teacher doing wrong?" attitude. Instead, we focused on "What do our students need to achieve?" attitude.
