Gail Mahon is an artist-researcher, movement-practitioner, and independent educator, who lives and works in the Causeway Coast area of Northern Ireland. A visiting Lecturer to NWRC, Ulster University, and Bath Spa University and Certified L1 MOVNAT coach, she develops physical learning situations, interactions, and projects related to her practices under StudioMA_hon. Mahon holds a Master’s degree from the Royal College of Art, in Ceramics, and is a recent joint recipient of Leitrim Sculpture Centre’s collaborative residency, in 2021, working with sound artist Aengus Friel Lawrence to research performance, cave ecology, and resonant spaces between the earth and bone.Mahon employs somatic awareness with her methods in ceramics as the perspective of active ecology within her bioart practices. Through sensory installation making, combines 'bodies' as environments of performance, utilising lens-based media, and microscopy imagining within social experiments with public participation. Collaboration and community are key to playful insights and meaningful research exchanges with other discipline areas who also share interests in changes occurring inside our bodies as a response to the environment and sociocultural changes in movement ecology. Her current studies at Ph.D. include bioarchaeology, to establish evolutionary human movements related to landscape, and physical interactions combined with advanced material processes in bio-ceramics viewing skeleton as the site of ecological exchange. This becomes rich grounds for transdisciplinary research as moving ecologies and materialities that reverse corporeal spaces in a practice of co-creation of health ecosystems.Tacit forms of practice and material making through the lens of clay became rooted in the importance of being outdoors with earth, soil, and minerals with ecosomatics.
