About Gail Lyons

As an accomplished Senior Software Engineer in the Intel Technical Computing, Analyzers, & Runtimes Group, I design and implement software tools and libraries. Selected highlights include:Fortran Compiler: Aided in the development of a Fortran compiler Front End that used the LLVM code generation support.Path Forward: Aided the development a simulator to help evaluate the efficacy of a new architecture.Fast Forward 2: Developed an MPI-like library for the Open Community Runtime, a task-based runtime framework. Created a unique tool using LLNL’s ROSE compiler framework to programmatically modify benchmarks to create data blocks. Fast Forward 1: Added performance optimizations to a subset of the OpenMP library. Increased scalability by minimizing the serial portion of thread creation. Used architecture specific instructions for barrier, broadcast and locking. These optimizations provided significant improvements as measured by LLNL’s CLOMP benchmark. Pin: Added new features and support to a dynamic binary instrumentation framework that enabled the creation of dynamic program analysis tools. Developed support for “Probe” mode, a method of using Pin to insert probes at the start of specified routines. ATOM: Sole software developer for a static instrumentation engine on Digital Unix. Added many enhancements, wrote specifications and documentation, and developed new APIs. Programming Languages: C, C++Operating Systems: Linux, WindowsSource Control: GitContinuous Integration: JenkinsBug Tracking: JIRACore Competencies: - Effective Engineering Skills: Good engineering and testing ability. Proven problem-solving skills. Conscientious about fixing bugs when they occur. - Enthusiastic Team Player: Listens to all sides of an issue and builds consensus. Fortran Compiler: 2021-2024: Aided in the development of a Fortran compiler Front End that used the LLVM code generation support.Path Forward: 2017-2019: Aided the development a simulator to help evaluate the efficacy of a new architecture.Fast Forward: 2013-2016 - A Department of Energy Exascale project which proposes a revolutionary architecture and software platform. FFWD-2: Developed MPI-Lite, a subset of the MPI APIs implemented using the Open Community Runtime (OCR) task-based programming model. Also created a unique source-to-source translation tool using ROSE from LLNL (https://xstack.exascale-tech.com/git/public?p=apps.git;a=tree;f=hll/rose/tools/globals2db/src;h=bf805c0352b58c9c2ceb8c800667d7539ab7d1b5;hb=refs/heads/dev/master). Investigated and resolved scaling issues. FFWD-1: Supported OpenMP on a bare-metal runtime by developing a threading model. Increased scalability by minimizing the serial portion of thread creation. Used architecture specific instructions for barrier, broadcast and locking. These optimizations provided significant improvements as measured by LLNL’s CLOMP benchmark. Enabled OpenMP on the FFWD-1 bare-metal runtime by developing a threading model. Also maintained the assembler for the new ISA.Advisor: 2010-2012 - Advisor helps clients parallelize their serial application. Developed the command line support. Pin: 2006-2009 - Developed new features and support to Pin, Intel's dynamic binary instrumentation tool. Designed and implemented "Probe" mode, which was popular because it reduced the instrumentation overhead. Bistro: 2004-2005 - Developed a high-level user interface to the Bistro static instrumentation tool.

Senior Software Engineer

Digital/Compaq

Sole developer for a static instrumentation engine called ATOM. ATOM allows tool writers to create a tool that inserts instructions anywhere in an executable or shared library, without having access to the sources. Added many enhancements, wrote specifications and documentation, and developed new APIs. This required understanding of the user interface, the symbol table, Alpha machine instructions, how to insert new instructions into the intermediate language, laying out and emitting the new executable, updating the relocations to allow for the inserted instructions, and creating the new symbol table.
