About Galen Baughman

Galen Baughman is a directly-impacted advocate dedicated to building a world where no person is permanently defined by a crime of conviction. He was awarded an Open Society Foundation Soros Justice Fellowship in 2015 to build a movement to end the indefinite detention of youth in Virginia, which led to the first abolition bill introduced in the then-31-year history of pre-crime preventative detention laws in the U.S.Galen has spent 14 years of his life behind bars, including 7 years in solitary confinement, starting when he was just a teenager. Today, he is a highly sought-after speaker and campaign strategist on sex-related offense policy, the disproportionate impact of the criminal legal system on LGBTQ+ people, and the human rights implications of policy approaches to public safety. He has also trained advocates around the country to build inclusive movements against mass incarceration.Galen founded Just Future Project from behind the walls to dismantle systems of preventative detention, abolish shadow prisons, and advocate for policies that support a clear path to restoration and reintegration for persons who have been in conflict with the law. Just Future is a policy advocacy nonprofit animated by the universal experience of our shared humanity that all people have the capacity for growth and change. At JFP, he seeks to build a more just future that recognizes the unalienable right to freedom from perpetual punishment based on an historical conviction. After first winning his release in 2012, Galen spent two years as the Director of Communications at International CURE, a grassroots advocacy organization, where he focused on policy analysis, direct advocacy, messaging strategies, and grassroots organizing. He was a JustLeadershipUSA 2015 Leading with Conviction Fellow. His essays have been published by Playboy Magazine, the Cato Institute, and others. He’s spoken to audiences at Yale Law School, the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, and on the TED Stage. In 2023, Galen was responsible for uncovering the systematic disenfranchisement of formerly incarcerated voters, resulting in the restoration of 3,400 unlawfully removed voters. Galen is a proud affiliate member of NACDL and participates on the Criminalization of Voting Rights Subcommittee. He is also a non-attorney (prior jailhouse lawyer & current policy expert) of the National LGBTQ+ Bar Association.Galen is on Twitter @GalenBaughman
