He was awarded an Open Society Foundation Soros Justice Fellowship in 2015 to build a movement to end the indefinite detention of youth in Virginia, which led to the first abolition bill introduced in the then-31-year history of pre-crime preventative detention laws in the U.S.Galen has spent 14 years of his life behind bars, including 7 years in solitary confinement, starting when he was just a teenager. Today, he is a highly sought-after speaker and campaign strategist on sex-related offense policy, the disproportionate impact of the criminal legal system on LGBTQ+ people, and the human rights implications of policy approaches to public safety. Galen is a proud affiliate member of NACDL and participates on the Criminalization of Voting Rights Subcommittee.
