About Galen Silvestri

I am Co-Founder and former Executive Director of United Roots, the first "green" youth center in Oakland, California, and also a media & tech center that was established in partnership with Black Eyed Peas and Adobe. I am a long-time community organizer, youth educator and media producer, and have worked with organizations like Men's Story Project and the Y-Step collective for racial equity. I was also Co-Founder and Director of the Turf Unity Music Program and a Co-founder of the Art in Action organization. I have over sixteen years of experience developing campaigns, projects, and programs in partnership with local and national communities, including The California Endowment's Alliance for Boys & Men of Color. Currently I am Co-Founding Youth Impact HUB, a co-working office space and incubation program for youth doing social entrepreneurship and innovation. Youth Impact HUB is the first Youth HUB in the Impact HUB international network, and is a partnership with Impact HUB Oakland. I also offer non-profit consulting services and do media project management for things like filmmaking, graphic design and music production.

As part of Art in Action I developed the Turf Unity Project, mobilizing low-income youth of color from over 40 neighborhoods in the East Bay to produce collaborative media for social change as part of a social enterprise initiative.
