The overarching aim of my PhD was to investigate large genomic datasets of enteric bacteria, consisting of thousands of genomes, to understand the contribution of horizontal gene transfer to the success of different lineages. Horizontal gene transfer is the main mechanism that enables bacteria to quickly adapt to changing environments, including to antibiotic stress. To achieve this work, I built a large collection of 18,000 E. coli genomes from diverse datasets, and curated it to a high-quality. I developed novel and creative computational pipelines to analyse data integrating Python and R scripts with other tools while accounting for the scale and biases of the dataset. I visualised results in clear and intuitive figures, that convey complex information in a simple manner. I also regularly communicated research verbally and in writing and taught and supervised peers new to computational biology.I am proficient in Python, R, BASH and Git. I have a passion for data visualisation.I also contributed to many other projects within my research team and with external collaborators.
