I acquired the family-owned manufacturing business during some of the toughest times in its 100-year history. The company was returning an annual loss of £4m when I took the reins, but – after only 18 months – I was able to embed a commercial mindset into a company that had previously focused exclusively on engineering and innovation. After initiating a radical restructure of the enterprise, I was then able to achieve growth by identifying a core product range, target markets and making two strategic acquisitions. Just 3 years later, the business was debt free and recorded consistent annual post-tax profits of £750k.
