I work with threat research, Managed Threat Response and AI teams to investigate the tools, tactics and procedures of network-enabled crime, and explain defense techniques and best practices. I work with the Sophos AI team to make their ongoing research accessible to IT and cybersecurity generalists.I continue with the work I did in my previous role, including my own research of web and social media based threat actors, scammers, spammers, malvertising, etc., for publication and media distribution. My research topics have included "pig butchering" rings and other organized cybercrime targeting individuals, malware-as-a-service networks, SEO poisoning and malvertising, among others. I also lead preparation of the annual threat report, conducting data research and working with stakeholders to gather trends for analysis.

I conducted independent research into web threats, phishing, ransomware and other information security threats, and worked with the team at SophosLabs to turn telemetry data, static and dynamic analysis, and incident response work into research reports for publication. I also collaborated with our incident responders to research and document incidents as part of public threat research reports. I used Python, SQL/MetaBase/RedShift, Kibana and other tools to explore telemetry and gather insight into malicious actors' tactics, techniques and procedures.I also worked with fellow researchers to develop their work into publishable research, acting as editor and occasionally as co-author—when I was able to add substantial additional supporting material to their work. This included working with incident responders to document the flow of ransomware attacks and other breaches.

As IT editor, I wrote, assigned and edited stories on innovations and trends in information technology, as well as its impact on people's lives, business, and culture. I wrote reviews of enterprise products and interesting non-mainstream technology. I often engaged in projects that explore the way technology can be used in unexpected ways, and what its larger impact might be. I focused on information security, privacy, Internet of Things, machine learning and digital transformation technologies.As National Security Editor, I covered the impact of technology on the world's diplomatic, political, intelligence and military stages--which included producing Sitrep, a regular video feature on defense technology news.I made frequent media appearances, including PBS NewsHour, CNBC, Fox Business News, and NPR--where I ran a collaborative project with NPR's Planet Money team exploring what data can be gathered about an individual based on Internet traffic. In the course of this project, I uncovered a privacy leak in Google Search's Maps interface; I received an honorable mention on Google's security for uncovering the bug in 2014. I have also spoken at a number of conferences in the information security sector, including co-presentation of a 4-hour workshop at DefCon and talks at ShmooCon, BlueRidgeCon, and BSides LV.

I worked as a contract editor and writer for a number of publishing companies, academic authors and technical clients, and wrote freelance articles for a variety of outlets. This included a year as a contractor at Conde Nast's Ars Technica before I became a full-time staff member.I also provided web consulting services, including basic SEO, site coding and testing, and content management consulting with Wordpress, Moveable Type, and other open-source CMS platforms.

As an NBC Universal contractor, I wrote articles on consumer technology and tech-lifestyle issues for TechGoesStrong, part of the LifeGoesStrong lifestyle blog site from NBC Universal Digital Media and P&G.

I wrote features and news stories for Defense Systems on information technology, cyber defense, and a range of topics that fall under the "C4ISR" banner.

I managed the online and print editorial operations of Defense Systems, a magazine covering the defense application of information technology for operations and net-centric warfare. I oversaw a redesign of both the print magazine and our online presence.I planned the editorial calendar for the publication, conceive editorial elements for web and online, interview DOD officials on Defense IT policy and procurement issues, and assign to and edit stories from a team of staff and freelance contributors.I transitioned to a contract role at Defense Systems after across-the-board layoffs at 1105.

I lead the editorial operations of TechTarget's Channel Media Group, and was responsible for the conception and launch of five new sites for solution providers, integrators and other channel professionals: Search IT Channel, Search Storage Channel, Search Systems Channel, Search Networking Channel, and Search Security Channel.

I acted as the staff technologist for Ziff Davis' enterprise IT publications group, managing all editorially-focused IT projects and acting as liason with Ziff's IT operations group. I personally managed the enterprise group's Web 2.0, streaming media and Weblog-based editorial initiatives, oversaw publication website redesigns, and advised on other technology projects affecting editorial workflow and operations.

I ran Baselinemag.com, CIOInsight.com, TheChannelInsider.com, Publish.com, PDFzone.com, and all enterprise-focused feature content on Ziff Davis Internet's sites. I was also the editorial lead for all projects related to new enterprise web titles, development of content management technology, syndication and alternative content delivery and promotion services (RSS, Trackback, del.icio.us, blogs, etc).
