As Manager, Engineering Operations, Midstream Americas, my responsibilities included oversight of the Project Engineering, Project Engineering Managers, Systems Engineering, and Document Controls at the Houston, Texas and Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago offices. The major client for most of our projects was ConocoPhillips, and involved the Eagle Ford Shale play, among others. Typical projects involved gas and condensate well pads, gathering and treatment systems, such as condensate stabilization, compression, and pipelines. Projects for other clients involved similar work, as well as some offshore, and a large diameter potable water pipeline and its related facilities in Trinidad.

Also, managed the FEL and Detail Design phases for a new SNCR system OSBL scope of work for an existing Boiler. This was an EPA consent decree project.* NOVA Chemicals (Canada) Ltd., Corunna, Ontario, Corunna Phase II Expansion (COP2E) Project. Proposal manager and nominated as project manager for the FEED phase at our Sarnia, Ontario office to explore a $250MM expansion of the Corunna plant's ethylene capacity to utilize up to 100% NGL feedstock and to take advantage of new advanced technology and ethane from the Marcellus Shale basin in support of NOVA's polyethylene growth strategy.* Ural Mining and Metallurgical Company (UMMC-Holding), Kemerovo Oblast (Siberia), Russian Federation, Coal-to-Liquids Project, Preliminary Feasibility Study (PFS) for our Johannesburg, South Africa office. Bechtel's Project Management Consultant (PMC) for the Reliance Industries Ltd., KG-D6 Offshore Gas Development Project at Aker Kværner Process Systems AS in Lysaker, Norway. Responsible for PMC oversight of the design and procurement of major equipment for the mono-ethylene glycol (MEG) Regeneration System at the Onshore Terminal (OT) located near Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh, India. The offshore gas production is dependent on subsea MEG injection at the wellhead. Large quantities of MEG are used to prevent hydrate formation in the gas pipelines during transport of gas from the offshore wellheads to the OT. In this process, the MEG is polluted with water and salts from the gas reservoir, production chemicals and various particles. The MEG Regeneration System conditions the MEG by removing water, salts and other undesirable constituents, enabling continuous re-use of the MEG in a closed loop.

Utilized a technical translator to facilitate communication with the Japanese extruder supplier and recover project schedule; coordinated piping and civil, fireproofing and thermal insulation; audited P&IDs and piping specialty items* BP Texas City Refinery. * Capital Projects Manager (Sep. 1989 - May 1991):Responsible for the plant engineering department and the capital improvement program, including complete EPC responsibility for a new $10MM brown-field flash drying facility for wet spent catalyst tailings recovery of nickel and cadmium, including a new multi-story steel structure, a new rail spur, bulk-loading terminal with storage silos, and bulk material handling feeders and conveyor equipment. Received a significant monetary commendation and promotion for exceptional budget and schedule performance on this project. Also, operated the plant briefly following its startup, and then oversaw the development of a RCRA storage facility for hazardous waste shipping containers filled with spent refinery desulfurization catalyst.* Manager of Maintenance & Construction (May 1991 - May 1992):Operational oversight of the plant mechanical, electrical and instrument maintenance departments, with 60 - 70 personnel, including mechanical and electrical maintenance engineers, design drafters, and a $5MM annual operating budget, in addition to Capital Projects. Responsible for a major plant turnaround, including the rebuild of a Herreshoff multiple-hearth roaster for the recovery of nickel, cadmium, molybdenum and vanadium from spent refinery desulfurization catalyst.

(formerly AFG Industries, Inc., which eventually became AGC Flat Glass North America, Inc.)Oversight of the corporate mechanical engineering department, including the CADD group and all engineering design disciplines. Responsibilities included all management aspects of Contracts, Procurement, Expediting, Quality, and Logistics, as well as cost accountability for the timing and purchase of foreign currencies for my projects. Drafted and negotiated EPC contracts, including commercial terms. Managed up to 12 reports, as well as contract engineers and designers, and oversaw outside engineering firms for detailed design work. In addition, I served as corporate gatekeeper to the company president for all mechanical projects initiated by the various plants. (After changing ownership, Powermatic® was acquired by Walter Meier Manufacturing, Inc., and relocated to La Vergne, Tennessee)Responsible for product development projects and for product liability evaluations of existing and imported machine tool products. The work involved machine design for improved product safety, lower manufacturing costs, and development of new and safer products and accessories for woodworking machine tools. Introduced the initial design application of the highly efficient and quiet running Poly-V® drive belt systems that are still used in today’s Powermatic® commercial and contractor grade shapers and table saws, and featured on their website and in their advertising literature. Position was eliminated as part of a major workforce reduction.

Fiber Glass Division, General Office Engineering Department. Management and field support of mechanical projects involving fiber glass manufacturing equipment and associated utilities at plants located in Shelby and Lexington, North Carolina, and at the Fiber Glass Research Center near Pittsburgh. Responsibilities included scope development of capital projects, cost estimates, evaluating mechanical equipment with vendors, writing mechanical equipment and installation specifications, preparing construction bid packages, holding bid meetings, evaluating quotes, selection and requisitioning of mechanical equipment and contractors, cost and schedule management of mechanical projects, supervision of drafters, and oversight of mechanical contractors at the job sites. Projects involved the selection, procurement and installation of process equipment and plant utilities such as compressed air and hydraulic systems, steam boilers, chillers and dryers, fans and blowers, emergency electric generators, and dense phase pneumatic bulk material conveying systems. Responsible for inspection, commissioning and startup of new equipment, for troubleshooting startup problems, and for directing on-site modifications to process equipment. Served on the process development special task force for production scale-up of the Azdel® (polypropylene/continuous strand fiber glass mat laminate material) pilot plant at Shelby, North Carolina. Resolved a restrictive oil-free compressed air shortage for the pneumatic batch conveying systems at the Shelby and Lexington plants by re-staging the existing Atlas Copco screw compressors into a cascade system, thus eliminating the need for planned additional compressors and dryers.

(The Ideal Cement Company, Knoxville Plant converted from wet-slurry to dry process, then changed ownership, and was eventually acquired by Cemex, Inc.)Directly supervised all Portland cement plant production and maintenance operations during rotating shifts. Responsible for plant operations included 10-12 shift personnel, four coal-fired rotary kilns with electrostatic precipitators, a coal storage and handling facility, three cylindrical ball mills (90 TPD, wet-slurry process), slurry pumping systems, belt conveyors, drag-chains, bucket and pneumatic conveying systems, rock impacting and crushing, and the open shale and limestone quarries. Also trained for dry-process Portland cement production.

(formerly known as Tennessee Eastman Company, a subsidiary of Eastman Kodak)Seven co-op assignments included Cellulose Esters maintenance and pump repair shop (mechanic's helper), central machine shop (numerical control and machinist’s helper), Special Projects Engineering (plant layout and piping design), Power & Services electric power plant maintenance engineering (reconstruction design of undocumented failed pump and machine components), Facilities Engineering (HVAC design projects), Acetate Yarn Maintenance Engineering, and Machine Design Engineering. Duties included drafting, mechanical design work and small plant projects. One of my innovative design ideas to replace the heavy cast iron ash gate pistons and leather seals beneath power plant steam boilers with fabricated aluminum disks and teflon pump packing rings was implemented with great success and has undoubtedly resulted in enormous cost savings over the past 40 years.
