Published: 22 March 2012The winner of Scottish Youth Work Manager of the Year has been announced. The category, which was sponsored by LSIS, was part of YouthLink Scotland’s National Youth Worker of the Year Awards 2012Gary Maguire, of Glasgow Life, was named the winner at the awards ceremony that was held on Thursday 15 March. The awards recognise outstanding service, contribution and performance by managers, youth workers, peer educators, teams and individuals working within the youth work sector across Scotland.More than 320 youth workers, managers, sponsors and invited guests attended the event, addressed by Minister for Children and Young People, Aileen Campbell MSP. Gary Maguire was nominated for his tirelessly work with young people in South West Glasgow. Gary inspires everyone he works with; from young people and his colleagues to partner agencies, council officials and members of the public. In just over seven years, Gary has markedly improved and raised the overall capacity of youth work within his Youth Services team area. One of Gary’s major achievements has been the establishment of SWAYED (South West Area Youth Engagement and Diversion) and its development from a working group to a voluntary youth organisation, Since its creation in 2005, Gary has grown the organisation to become the number one youth work provider within South West Glasgow, with more than 47,861 attendances in 2010/11.Penny Bance, Director of UK Qualifications and Skills, LSIS, said: “We are very pleased to be giving this award to Gary. LSIS is committed to supporting excellent leadership within the Further Education and Skills sector. “This category was created to recognise a senior manager who has demonstrated outstanding vision, leadership and partnership working.
