While Employed at TelePro Group, I was tasked with calling North American manufacturers for the purpose of asking them research questions concerning their current equipment and the precision of their measurements. The purpose of which was to determine if these manufacturers were in the market for improved measurement devices provided by Keyence, a manufacturer of precision measurement tools and machinery. Thanks to my efforts, TelePro Group was able to turn a list of manufacturers into a number of actionable leads that allowed Keyence to sell disruptive, innovative technology to those manufacturers. Easily, the most important thing I learned from this job was empathy and being able to get the information TelePro Group required with ease. Many of the manufacturers were skeptical and suspecting my calls of being sales-related. By matching the tone and pace of the person on the other side of the line, I was able to defuse tension and gather vital information without causing irritation to the manufacturer I was calling.

At Jesuit, we had these things called Blue Books. They were sheets of loose-leaf paper bound together between two blue sheets of construction paper. These books were for the purpose of essay writing on exams at Jesuit. These books are sold at the bookstore for 50 cents each. They are also sold by the teachers in the class for a dollar each as a way of teaching the students to be better prepared in the future. I had the idea of buying the Blue Books in bulk and then selling them for 75 cents directly to the students. I would be a quarter more expensive than the bookstore, but I would not have the long waiting times the bookstore had, and I was mobile and able to come to the students in need. I was also a quarter cheaper than the classroom professors, finding the perfect sweet spot between the two competitors. After a guerrilla marketing campaign, I completely broke into the Blue Book market and disruptively innovated the buying and selling of these Blue Books. I realized that quarters are not commonly carried by students, but individual dollars are. What I ended up doing is carrying a roll of quarters in a re-purposed tube of Emergen-C tablets. I would ask for a dollar from the students and then give back a quarter. In the grand scheme of things, the money I made from this was almost negligible, but one major benefit from this business adventure is that the profits I made from selling Blue Books allowed me to frequently purchase snacks from the vending machines on campus at my high school and the money was even enough to pay for the odd trip to the vending machines at DePaul University!
