Amr Magdi is a multilingual, experienced researcher, investigator, policy analyst and advocate with a focus on public policy, governance and human rights, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa. Throughout his career in the human rights field, and journalism before it, he covered a broad range of topics including; freedom of speech, cybercrime laws and hate speech; abuses by law enforcement agencies such as torture and unlawful killings during counterterrorism operations; anti-women and anti-LGBT discrimination; as well as the impact of foreign loans on economic and social policies. His broader research interests include tech and human rights, social responsibilities of businesses, extremism, and democratization. Amr's investigative work has often made headlines and been featured in major news outlets from Reuters, to The New York Times and The Guardian. His opinion pieces appeared in outlets including the Foreign Policy, the Newsweek, Middle East Eye, Open Democracy, Mada Masr, Almasry-Alyoum, and Jadaliyya website. He has participated in numerous television interviews including for Al Jazeera, France 24, Deutsche Welle, and BBC. Amr is also a seasoned advocate who met with dozens of government and United Nations officials and other varied stakeholders around the world in order to both discuss the findings and push for the recommendations outlined in his work both in private and public advocacy settings. He is skilled at networking, designing and overseeing campaigns with partners in order to ensure impact.Amr is a doctor (physician) by training. He studied medicine and surgery in Egypt. But his passion drove him to a career change where he could do what he enjoys the most: policy analysis, and defending and pursuing justice.
