I'm an environmental journalist and the author of Choked: Life and Breath in the Age of Air Pollution (University of Chicago Press/Granta Books). Choked made the Guardian’s Best of 2019 list, and was a finalist for the (U.S.) National Association of Science Writers’ Science in Society book award, and a winner of the Green Prize for Sustainable Literature. I wrote the cover story for the April 2021 issue of National Geographic, and my work has also appeared in the New York Times (including an Op-Ed and two Sunday Review pieces), the Guardian, the Washington Post, Scientific American, HuffPost, Smithsonian and Yale Environment 360. I’m a two-time fellow of the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, a recipient of the CUNY Journalism School’s McGraw Fellowship for Business Journalism, and a grantee of the Society of Environmental Journalists' Fund for Environmental Journalism. I frequently discuss environmental and political stories on radio, TV and at in-person events. I've appeared on NPR's All Things Considered, Here & Now and TED Radio Hour, MSNBC, WNYC's Brian Lehrer Show, KQED Forum and in the U.K. with outlets including BBC Radio 4's World at One, BBC News Channel, Sky News, and LBC radio. I've appeared on stage at TEDx London, the New York Public Library, the 92nd Street Y, the L.A. Times Festival of Books, the Lahore Literary Festival in Pakistan, Polityka Insight in Warsaw and the Austrian World Summit on climate change, among others. Before going freelance, I was an Associated Press reporter for ten years, based in New York and London. I covered stories including the 2004 Asian tsunami and the 2005 London subway bombings, led AP coverage of British politics, and flew on Tony Blair's plane to report on prime ministerial trips to China, India, Washington, Beirut and Jerusalem. I'm an American living in London.
