Over the course of my career I have worked as a self-starter, an owner and partner in a small business, and a Lead Developer in a large multinational corporation. I began by developing websites for Simply Internet in London, a chain of internet cafés. I was promoted to IT Development Manager in 1999, and learned about software project management and server installation and maintenance. Despite many growth opportunities in the UK, I decided to return to my home country of South Africa in 2001, where I contracted to several companies to provide website and software development. In 2005 I opened my own web development company, Cornishweb. In 2008, I decided to open a new company, Black Square Web Solutions, with a partner who specialized in web design, and with whom I could work closely on seamless integration of function and UX. I developed a flexible and customizable content management system, and together we built many small and large websites, including for clients such as The South African History Archives, PACE, Credible Carbon and Specialised Bicycles .In 2013 I joined Derivco, the world’s leading online gaming software development house, as a Senior Developer.. In 2016 I was promoted to Lead Developer. In this role I initiated and oversaw the design, implementation, development and delivery of Titan, the platform onto which all of Derivco’s H5 games are being migrated. During the course of the project I led a team that varied from 25 to 100 people.Over my 25+ year career I’ve formulated a short list of basic principles:• I believe in designing software that is maintainable; software is constantly changing, and a project and SDLC needs to incorporate this fact.• I believe in using the latest technologies to produce the final product; from the latest languages and software technologies to the cloud and the latest devops strategies.• I believe in capturing intent, so we never have to ask ourselves, “why did we do that?”.• I believe that software must be documented, thoroughly tested and carefully monitored, to be successful.• I believe in automating everything I can, and in making use of the latest ML and AI techniques to do so.• I believe that all software is ultimately, actually used by humans.
