The move away from corporate practice has enabled me to better focus on clients and do what I do best, provide a personal service, whether it may be private housing, commercial development or working with contractors to help deliver their projects. I am currently doing all three and enjoying the varied experience.Despite my 'carbon zero' house hitting the buffers with the planners, I am still on the look out for opportunities to deliver carbon zero solutions and further my experience of delivering the UK's first BREEAM Outstanding and carbon neutral office back in 2009. This included winning national and regional frameworks and working across all 7 offices and all sectors in both public and private fields. My thirty years plus experience covering most building types has resulted in considerable knowledge and skill in designing and managing major projects and teams from inception to completion. This included setting up and running Stride Treglown’s Cardiff Studio between1996 and 2012 and developing it into one of Wales’ top five architecture practices. That studio grew significantly on the back of education, health and residential work and is now home to nearly 40 staff accommodated in the UK's first privately funded Carbon Neutral and BREEAM “Outstanding” scored office. I was instrumental in its design and development and am passionate about delivering sustainable buildings. -

Clients included Cardiff Bay Development Corporation, MEM Group, Wicker Group and several housing associations. During this time I designed and built my own house, L' Atelier in Cardiff, which won a Cardiff Lord Mayors Award and a National Eisteddfod Plaque of Merit Award. It has subsequently been featured on television and magazines.

DirectorHolder Mathias Jun 1978 - Nov 1990Cardiff And LondonI joined Holder Mathias in 1978 and immediately set up their small Chepstow office dealing with a 90 house urban renewal project in the heart of historic Lower Chepstow, requiring the demolition of a number of existing sub standard properties. The office was set up as an exhibition and local link with existing householders working with them to agree their relocation and specification for their new houses. The first phase won a Welsh Housing Gold Medal Award. I was promoted to Associate and then Divisional Director running a division within the practice. In 1986 I moved to the London office jointly running the office and quickly developed a team of 22 staff working on housing in London Docklands principally for Regalian Properties. I returned to the Cardiff office in1988 and was appointed Director. I left in November 1990 to set up my own practice.

Project ArhitectAlex Gordon Partnership Jul 1973 - Oct 1978CardiffProject Architect for Companies House Repository, Cardiff - an air conditioned building designed to accommodate 20miles of shelving for the storage of paper files for all UK registered businesses. The building has largly become obselete for this purpose as gradually files were subsequently stored on micro film and now digitally. Also project architect for a city centre 'streets in the air' high density housing scheme in Cardiff for West Lea Housing Association and an adjoining office development for a private developer.
