Providing support to Fluid-MS concerning health risks in manufacturing environments and the value of using real-time sensors to monitor exposure to hazardous and environmental emissions.

I recently retired from the Health and Safety Executive Science Directorate after 20 years of managing research into the causation and prevention of occupational lung and skin disease. I am now working part-time as a Consultant. I have started to work with the UK Lubricants Association to support their work in developing good practices and safe management of metalworking fluids for machining. This continues collaboration with the UKLA that started in 2005 and which led several years ago to the publication of a good practice guide for the UK industry ( https://www.ukla.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/UKLA-HSE-Good-Practice-Guide-for-Safe-Handling-and-Disposal-of-Metalworking-Fluids.pdf). In my new role supporting the UKLA I will be helping to develop educational films which will help to convey good practice with MWFs, I will continue to work closely with academic, industry and regulatory colleagues to assess the future safe use of new manufacturing methods (automated management of metalworking fluids) and the development of advanced manufacturing and materials (e.g., graphene).

Dr Gareth Evans has published 83 peer reviewed' papers and book chapters. He is the responsible technical lead for health hazard investigations in areas such as occupational cancer and respiratory allergy. He has contributed to a 7 year study updating estimates of the current and future burden of occupational cancer (led by Dr Lesley Rushton at Imperial College). He has also worked closely with HSE and industry to take forward a programme of research into exposure to used metal working fluids and respiratory allergy. Other research includes investigation of exposure to allergens in the baking industry.Gareth is also leading a team of HSL staff to develop new tools to look after and disseminate expert knowledge. Non-clinical lecturer in the Department of Child Health, Clinical Sciences South Division, Medical School. Responsibilities for running a research group investigating inflammatory bowel disease and respiratory inflammation caused by Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) infection in infants and children. The research was undertaken in collaboration with Professor Mark Everard, Professor Christopher Taylor, Professor Hilary Powers and Professor Adam Finn.

Investigate the role of connective tissue in the maintenance of epithelial stem cells in the gastrointestinal tract by developing novel in vitro organotypic models and through the use of tissue grafting techniques. The research was undertaken in collaboration with Professor Christopher Potten, Professors Charlie Campbell and Ian Tait (Ninewells Hospital Dundee), and Professor Michèle Kedinger (Inserm, U682, Univ de Strasbourg, France).
