Nature of Business: Roof Bolt Manufacturing Company. KPI's: Initially to oversee and guide the setup of a new ‘greenfield’ roof bolt manufacturing company called Jennmar SA with investment from the USA. This was aligned with the short-term strategy of creating a one-stop-shop for mine customers with our sister company, Rocbolt Resins. Following the successful start-up, we formed Rocbolt Technologies through a statutory amalgamation of DSI SA, Rocbolt Resins and Jennmar SA. Rocbolt Technologies is one of the largest ground support companies in Southern Africa. I am responsible for the creation and successful implementation of our strategic plans, and overseeing the complete operational success of the business by interacting, guiding and motivating my team of Senior Managers.

The company’s focus was to supply engineered solutions to various industrial markets, manufacturing a multitude of machined components and fittings for the mining, construction, automotive, armaments and hydraulics industries. A large portion of the business was the supply of cable anchor components used in the mining and construction industries. We also manufactured fittings used in the automotive industry and railway industries. I was involved as a shareholder to prepare the company for sale, the then major shareholder wanted to sell the business. We set up systems and processes to create a sustainable company and sold it successfully to a private equity firm. I stayed on as Managing Director until I was approached by Jennmar USA to set up a roof bolt manufacturing plant in South Africa.

The Steeledale Group is the leading supplier of reinforcing steel to the mining, construction, and civil engineering industries, as well as becoming a larger supplier of hard-drawn wire, fencing, and industrial welded mesh into various industries, with a turnover in excess of R1.5 billion. Offered Strategic direction to the group and assisted with the restructuring of divisions. Full general management functions for the Mesh & Wire Division (R300m turnover) covering financial management, factory operations, sales and marketing, resource development, and future strategic and operational planning.

Duraset is a manufacturing company focussing its efforts in the underground mining market. A supplier of roof bolts specialised products like mine railway sleepers and ground support products used in the geotechnical industries. As Director of Duraset and General Manager of the newly created Geotechnical Division, I was responsible for the entire operation, from the factory to sales & marketing. We were able to grow this division from its inception in excess of 30% per annum, resulting in a turnover of R115m in 2009.

Fulcrum manufactured fluid handling equipment used by the fuel and chemical industry. I was responsible for the sales and marketing for Fulcrum in South Africa, as well as supporting our distributors in Europe and Australia with pricing and marketing information.
