From a design perspective and working to strict carbon and energy targets my focus area was on operational energy reduction from the auto transformers. Through design collaboration as a team we achieved significant reductions in latent energy loss, generating carbon and costs savings over the project lifespan. Working closely with the universities facilities management teams and sustainability department to implement innovative and engaging initiatives. Working as part of the national Green Impact program the team set an internal target to reduce the university energy consumption by 6% from the previous 4-year average. This was achieved through the implementation of ‘switch it off’ campaigns, altering computer sleep settings and the implementation of PIR lighting systems in libraries to name a few.

Gareth lead the deployment of 130-hectare community-based forestry scheme to promote reforestation to previously degraded lands in south east Madagascar. The environment and socially sustainable scheme followed the principles of the United Nations REDD+ program and provided fulltime employment for a 120 strong local workforce, reinjecting ecosystem services to local communities.
