Despite my granddaughters' and wife's best efforts to keep me entertained, old Marcel is also quite good at getting my attention. My doctoral thesis was published in 1979 and has kept its head above water since then. I want to freshen it up and draw on all that fieldwork to bring out new conclusions tuned to some new reading I've been doing. Using innovative and strategic thinking over a range of subjects: - advising Pascal Lamy and Peter Mandelson on climate change, explaining DG Trade’s position in the European Parliament and elsewhere,- conducting face to face negotiations in four African regions, the Caribbean, the Pacific, China, and ASEAN, to draw up sustainable development provisions in EU trade agreements, - persuading the Commission and the Fair Trade movement that an EU regulation was actually the last thing they needed, - consulting and negotiating with the 27 Member States and 170 non-OECD countries on the revision of EU regulations governing EU exports of non-hazardous waste.

Managing conflict:- dealing with the impacts of the BSE crisis: lobbying successfully to persuade the Germans to drop their ban on exports of British beef, - acting as head of the 12-strong Bonn office after the main Embassy moved to Berlin, - using interest in communications and information technology on behalf of the office as well as designing our web presence, - chairing "die Agrardiplomaten": the group of 70 or 80 agricultural diplomats from the other Embassies and organising events including seminars, workshops, fact-finding visits to German family businesses.

- Detailed involvement with livestock and meat sectors.- Acted as secretary to internal UK review of sea fisheries policy.- Implemented EU Nitrate Directive in UK, took part in North Sea Conference and Oslo and Paris Commission negotiations on pollution of North East Atlantic, chaired sub-committee on nutrients from agriculture.
