Profile bio

About Gar Hoover

I am an award-winning filmmaker who does it all: write, direct, shoot, edit.As co-founder of ideafarm films, a visual storytelling and content creation agency, I’ve created both short- and long-form video content for corporate, nonprofit and entrepreneurial organizations — from tech startups and professional services firms to global manufacturers and healthcare institutions — delivering cinematic-quality video across a wide range of platforms. These include brand anthems, testimonials, corporate profiles, recruiting films, thought-leadership pieces and online ads as well as fundraising and impact films for nonprofits. As an experienced storyteller with skills honed from years in the worlds of journalism, advertising and entertainment, I bring to each film project a rare business perspective, along with a deep understanding of how to transform messages into a compelling story that connects emotionally with audiences. On the narrative side, I’ve written and directed full-length features, series and short film projects, the most recent of which — CURTAINS — premiered at the Oscar-qualifying L.A. Shorts International Film Festival and went on to screen at more than two-dozen live festivals and win three Best Comedy awards. It is now streaming on Amazon Prime. I have also directed, shot and cut together several music videos that have gone on to screen at festivals, including the prestigious Sidewalk Film Festival in Birmingham. In addition to commissioned and narrative projects, I’ve been active in the mentoring and teaching community. I’ve taught Story for Film & TV in the film department at Loyola University Chicago for seven years and, for five years, was an instructor at The Second City, where I taught long-form narrative to graduates of its renowned sketch-writing program.I'm also an accomplished brand strategist and content creator, having helped several startups to SMBs at a critical growth stage articulate their value to better connect with customers and capital. I excel at establishing, refining and communicating engaging brand stories across media and platforms. I've worked heavily in tech, finance, commercial real estate, healthcare and professional services.I began my career as a newspaper editor and business writer on the East Coast and, after a move to Chicago, worked for a large investor relations/financial PR agency, where I led media relations and thought-leadership programs for high-profile investment and professional services firms, including KPMG’s Real Estate Practice.

Listed skills include Screenwriting, Writing, Film Production, Short Films, and 16 others.
