• The Leadership Institute is a program for incoming freshman who have demonstrated leadership potential in high school• The weekend is designed to develop leadership skills, build friendships, make connections, and above all help each student recognize their leadership potential so that they can return to the university and contribute• As an Institute Leader I was selected and paired with another leader, working closely as a team we were trained on leadership practice, theory and development• During the weekend we lead a group of about 15 incoming freshman, beginning with a group of strangers, and working towards the end goal of having one cohesive group of students ready to lead in their own communities • We work hand in hand with the students as we cover topics such as multiculturalism, inclusion, civic and community participation

• The Science & Math Investigative Learning Experiences, or SMILE, is an after school academic enrichment program for grades 4-12 for minorities and disadvantaged students that encourages them in the STEM field• A sub-program of this organization is the EOSA weekend where a large group of 4th and 5th graders attend W. Alton Jones Campus in West Greenwich, RI• During this weekend, URI students form teams, as well as an environmental lesson plan that they will in turn teach to the young students• As an intern, I served as co-coordinator, overseeing the overall flow and structure of the weekend• I worked closely with the URI mentors, and was available all weekend for support, advice, as well as facilitate certain parts of the weekend
