I worked with Dr. Ryan Walter to analyze physical and chemical parameters from sensors deployed in the Morro Bay Estuary. The goal was to understand how the bay’s chemistry and physics are altered as a response to periods of river discharge. I utilized Matlab to plot and perform statistical tests on the data.

In Bockmon’s Ocean Carbon Lab, I used instruments to measure the carbonate properties of water samples to understand the variability of ocean acidification. I learned a diverse range of ocean sampling techniques, instrumentation tools, programming software, and data analysis methods. The lab has forced me to think out of the box in order to solve various problems, such as 3D printing parts and conducting small experiments for efficient instrumentation. I was also awarded the frost scholarship and had the opportunity to spend the summer working in Dr. Bockmon's laboratory.

California Polytechnic State University

In Dr. White’s biological oceanography lab I assisted develop a common garden reciprocal experiment to determine adaptive differences between the species K. kelletii found north and south of Pt. Conception. My role was to develop and maintain a water flow system that provides filtered seawater to 44 individual ‘mating’ chambers. With marine organisms on the line, prompt revisions occurred frequently to ensure consistent filtered ocean water reaches each chamber.

Mountain View, Ca

NASA Ames Aerobiology DivisionI worked in the bioengineering and instrumentation group, which aims at understanding the activity, distribution, and diversity of microbial organisms in the aerobiosphere. I designed and built a waterproof sensor package used to measure the environmental and physical conditions during sampling. I wrote code to communicate with & control sensors, built integrated circuitry, 3d printed parts, and analyzed data (MATLAB & Python).

La Jolla, Ca

Within Dr. Martz Chemical Oceanography Lab, I worked on the Smartfin project, which integrates sensors within a surfboard fin for oceanographic data collection in the coastal ocean. My objective was to test multiple pH sensors to understand their capacity to be incorporated within a small surfboard fin. I wrote software to communicate with microcontrollers and sensors, designed 3D printed parts, ran controlled experiments to test the pH sensors, analyzed data output, assembled functioning Smartfins (soldering, testing circuits & potting), and deployed sensor packages in the ocean environment.
