One of my free time passions is for history and historic preservation, which I combine by being an author, public historian, and licensed tour guide in the Washington, DC area. I'm the author of eight books: - "The Prohibition Hangover: Alcohol in America from Demon Rum to Cult Cabernet" (Rutgers University Press, 2009)- "Prohibition in Washington, D.C.: How Dry We Weren't" (The History Press, 2011) - "The Potomac River: A History and Guide" (The History Press, 2012) - "The Smithsonian Castle and the Seneca Quarry" (The History Press, 2013) - "Capital Beer: A Heady History of Brewing in Washington, D.C." (The History Press, 2014) - "Walt Whitman in Washington, D.C.: The Civil War and America's Great Poet" (The History Press, 2015) - "The Great War in America: World War I and Its Aftermath" (Pegasus Books, 2018) - "A Decade of Disruption: America in the New Millennium" (Pegasus Books, 2020) My first book looks at the unchartered waters of how the U.S. adapted to alcohol since Prohibition ended in 1933, leaving a regulatory and social "hangover." Alcohol has largely lost its stigma: two-thirds of adults now drink, and it has become much more of a normal consumer product. As I developed the first book, I also created a fun historic walking tour called the "Temperance Tour" of Prohibition-related sites in Washington, DC. I now lead more fifteen tours around the Washington, D.C. area; it's fun and challenging, and provides a way to share my love of history and storytelling..
