I've worked on many different projects in a few different roles as WGU has worked to modernize its technology stack. I initially started working on managing WGU's Banner servers. We upgraded from Banner 8 to Banner 9, built configuration management scripts using Chef for server management, and explored building an event driven architecture using tools such as Banner Event Publisher, AWS SQS, SNS, Kinesis, and Oracle Goldengate.I also worked with some other teams to build out event driven serverless architectures in AWS using the Leo service.I maintained WGU's Chef implementation. This involved maintaining the chef server database (performance enhancements, automatically pruning old data, etc), updating existing recipes as needed to deploy new security tools, update AD/DNS settings, etc.I worked as tech lead with WGU's Platform team to build multiple generic CI/CD pipelines for deploying various resources into AWS. We built several different pipelines that were used by many different teams across WGU. We built pipelines for AWS Fargate, API Gateway, RDS, DocumentDb, EC2, and other services. We migrated close to 200 applications off of virtual machines and into AWS Fargate. This streamlined deployments and increased reliability thanks to autoscaling and self-healing.I also set up a Kafka cluster deployed into AWS managed entirely via infrastructure as code and configuration management (using AWS SSM State Manager with standalone Chef).I help troubleshoot issues during outages, mentor other engineers, and provide guidance to other teams on architecture, best practices, and utilizing WGU tools. I work with other principal engineers to guide WGU’s policies on cloud usage, monitoring, alerting,cost management, architecture, etc.

My first project was to migrate the company's support forum, knowledge base, and documentation systems into a single Drupal website. I built tools for the documentation team to help them manage their content: export and import guides for localization, automatic generation of pdf documents, and more.I then worked on customizing an ecommerce website (running Ablecommerce). I added localization support, integrated it into our accounting software (Navision), built a tool to allow customers to see a list of all of the product keys they owned and manage their maintenance, built a system to automatically send renewal reminders to customers when their keys were about to expire, added the ability to use single-sign-on from another company website, and more.I was also given responsibility over most of our customer-facing sites. I managed several Ablecommerce instances, a Wordpress blog, and several Drupal sites (both for marketing and customer support). I was responsible for periodic maintenance, performance tuning, and the occasional customization. I set up an automatic backup solution for the drupal and wordpress MySQL databases. The backup solution uses MySQL replication and periodic full database snapshots and gives the ability to restore a site's database to any specific point in time within minutes.

I started working at Snow College for the Natural Science division. I was tasked with helping maintain several of the department websites, building a new homepage template for faculty, and building a web application for an annual math contest (a contest for grade school students hosted by Snow College.) The math content application had the ability to allow schools to register their students, display historical results, and included a photo gallery.I eventually moved into the Snow College IT department and helped several different departments build web applications. I worked with the housing department to build a housing application form (to replace their old paper method). I also built a tool to allow local off-campus housing providers to display information about their housing opportunities to prospective students. I built an application for human resources to help students find and apply for on-campus jobs.
