I am an Associate Professor and Head of the Metabolic Neuroscience Research Laboratory at The University of Melbourne, where my research focuses on understanding how the brain regulates metabolism and its role in developing metabolic diseases such as obesity and diabetes. My mission is to deliver transformative treatments for metabolic diseases, which are poised to become the leading cause of death by 2030. I am also the Founder and Chief Scientific Officer of AmarX, a biotech company focused on developing the next generation of therapeutics to tackle metabolic diseases.At the forefront of this scientific frontier, my laboratory uses and develops cutting-edge technologies alongside a collaborative ethos to identify how metabolic diseases develop. Our research aims to address the significant lack of long-term therapeutics to treat these conditions, which place unsustainable burdens on global health systems.I am also passionate about research training and teaching. I lecture to over 1500 students per year on neuroscience, physiology, and metabolism at The University of Melbourne.I’ve published in top-tier journals such as Nature, Cell, Cell Metabolism, Nature Metabolism, eLife, Cell Reports, Nature Communications, Science Advances and Diabetes, with several of my articles ranking in the top 1% of all articles tracked by Altmetric. My research has been recognized with over 16 awards ( including the Dean’s Innovation Award and ANZOS Young Investigator Award) and $12 million in competitive research funding from international bodies such as NHMRC, ARC, Diabetes Australia, MRC, and industry.
