Profile bio

About Garron Knox

I am an alumnus of SJSU with a B.S. in mechanical engineering.I was the 2020-2021 SJSU Baja SAE club powertrain lead.I interned at Micro-Mechanics USA from May-2020 to December-2021.Through my internship at Micro-Mechanics, I have learned many skills outside of what would be considered "classical" mechanical engineering. I have had to research and develop new tooling options to increase profitability and product quality, give professional presentations to high-level clients (PowerPoint), develop or update finishing and assembly processes to comply with aerospace and semiconductor industry guidelines, create detailed documentation, perform work-flow analysis to find and eliminate process bottlenecks, and perform in-depth return on investment studies (excel). On top of these new skills I have learned, I've been developing my baseline skills in CAD design, detailed part drawings, DFM, DFA, tolerancing, design validation, useful data collection, material determination, material optimization, and quality validation. Although my first love is SOLIDWORKS, the design work I do at Micro-Mechanics uses Autodesk Inventor. I am very comfortable with both CAD software. All projects support a 24 hour CNC production line. I see new and unique challenges daily like designing and manufacturing fixtures for CNC milling, creating fixtures for part holding and protection during finishing and assembly operations, packaging design/fabrication for safe material handling, and work in facilities maintenance. Also important are the soft skills I have learned: communication, teamwork, punctuality, working on a time crunch, people management, organization, and cleanliness. Through the Baja SAE team, I have developed many useful industry skills. In the design phase, I learned rule compliance, tolerancing, design for safety, design for manufacturability, design for assembly, design for cost savings, design for weight reduction, fully dimensioned drawings, Finite Element Analysis, and designing for planned failure points (system-level design). In the manufacturing and assembly phase, I learned many labor-based skills such as turning on a lathe, manual mill operation, material preparation, general power and hand tool handling, TIG welding, and shop safety. The assembly phase is where I learned the most about designing for manufacturability and designing for assembly as most parts get manufactured in-house and all parts get assembled by us. The soft skills developed were teamwork, planning, organization, networking, task delegation, safety training, and project management.
