Garry is a retired Battalion Chief for Charlotte Fire Department. He also served as the Hazardous Materials Coordinator for City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County. He presently sits on the State of North Carolina SERC (State Emergency Response Commision) as a commissioner. Chief McCormick started in the fire service in Pennsylvania in 1976. He moved to Charlotte in December 1986 when he was hired by the Charlotte Fire Department as a Firefighter. He was promoted to Firefighter II in 1988, to Captain in 1992, and to Battalion Chief in 2001. While a firefighter and Captain, he was assigned to Station 13 and the Hazmat companies. He earned his AAS degree in Fire Science Technology from Central Piedmont Community College in 1992. He maintains professional memberships in the North Carolina Association of HazMat Responders, National Fire Protection Association, International Association of Fire Chiefs, and the International Association of Firefighters. He was formerly an active member on North Carolina Emergency Managements RRT (regional response hazmat teams) advisory committee. He presently still serves on the NC SERC hazardous materials sub committee.
