Senior Associate ScientistThe Chemours Company Mar 2019 - Oct 2019Wilmington, Delaware -
Associate InvestigatorThe Chemours Company Jan 2017 - Feb 2019Wilmington, DeAssociate and Senior Associate Scientist (Process Development Center) (2017 to 2019), Wilmington, DEPerformed batch and continuous processes making intermediates for earth friendly insulation products using 1 liter and 5 gallon claves with support apparatus.• Demonstrated feasibility of scale-up of the processes• Provided data to allow refinement and improvement of yields of products• Prepared and led many Process hazards Reviews for these processes• Prepared and led weekly team meetings and monthly safety meetings -
Associate ScientistDupont 2015 - 2016Dupont Experimental StationAssociate Scientist (Industrial Bio-products) 2015 - 2016Performed polymerization and analysis of polysaccharides. Assembled, modified, and ran experiments at 0.5 – 4liter scale using several enzymes and sugar sources. Analyzed samples from experiments with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for sugars and oligomers. Made caustic dopes from polymer for falling ball and gelling studies. • Developed and improved process for production of polysaccharides through polymerization utilizing various enzymes, feed materials, rpms, pH, time, temperature, etc. to improve yield, quality and purity of product.• Managed large spreadsheet workbooks and maintained records, allowing colleagues to examine all aspects tested and their results to determine compatibility with various aspects of the project.• Traveled to National Corn-to-Ethanol Research Center (NCERC) to observe and coordinate pilot scale studies of polysaccharide production, resulting in monetary and time savings. Replacing senior engineers who had been doing the coordination previously. -
Associate Scientist (Biofuel Products)Dupont 2010 - 2015Experimental StationSupported experimental corn – bio-butanol program. Conducted many flask assays and analyzed assays by Gas Chromatograph (GC). Used a Soxhlet column for measuring mass transfer. • Determined improvements to corn to bio-butanol process, particularly for fermentation process, by testing hundreds of conditions.• At ~10 - liter scale examined and modified tubing and Rx impellers to enhance mixing and separation of 2 phase broth/ corn oil fatty acid (COFA) systems, resulting in monetary savings in a process where fermentation product kills the fermentation bacteria at higher concentrations.• Performed safety reviews and monthly inspections of other colleague’s labs as safety management subject matter expert, identifying areas that needed to be updated and improved. • Used Soxhlet column to confirm amount of corn oil yielded by ground corn feed materials. Corn oil converts to COFA which would need to be added later in the process. • Mentored new staff on safety and lab techniques resulting in no injuries or incidents and fewer “Oops” moments (running multiple drying tests in parallel and making sure chillers can breathe so as not to overheat, for example) -
Associate ScientistDupont 2002 - 2010Experimental StationExplored methods of extracting and purifying valued peptides from E.Coli fermentation broth. Operated and maintained equipment for process and development of 10 liter pipeline. Ordered supplies and equipment, maintained lab, updated data spreadsheets, performed varied analysis, and transferred information to electronic lab notebook system (ELN). • Developed and improved process of recovering and purifying inclusion bodies (fermentation product), using centrifugation, pasteurization, homogenization, pH adjustment and page gel analysis.• Tested and proved equipment in the process, including Whisperfuge stacked disc centrifuge, GEA homogenizers and Microthermic’s HTST sterilizer/ pasteurizer, managing repair of unique equipment, enabling testing to continue with minimal downtime.• Ensured safety management by enforcing Hazards Assessment Management with every change or addition of equipment and creating procedures to minimize any hazards not engineered around. -
