Like many of you, I was spiraling up through the Corporate ladder and found myself leading a major pipeline operation. My charter from the Board of Directors was clear: - Repair the relationship with the foundation customer and with the Government;Arrest the delivery failures;Instil accountability within the Leadership team and Reduce the high staff turnover.It was at this critical time I encountered an internationally renowned consultant and global organisational troubleshooter, which marked a turning point in my professional life.Despite my prior successes, this consultant, Karen, transformed my thinking with new perspectives, knowledge, and frameworks, that made implementation both easier and intuitive. Our team orchestrated a remarkable turnaround.We exceeded the Board's expectations by eliminating delivery interruptions, slashing operating costs, halving staff churn, implementing robust governance controls to mitigate risks, and rebuilding relationships with both the Government and our foundation customer.However, this success didn't shield me from personal challenges when Karen and I grappled with personal feelings that had emerged, both hesitant to disrupt our successful professional relationship. Eventually, the inevitable transpired – Karen and I married, and I transparently declared a potential conflict of interest to my board as our relationship evolved.Over two decades have now passed since that transformative period.
