As a founder and partner of Beacon Pointe Advisors, I assist institutions in managing and monitoring their investable assets. Prior to my current career in finance, as a proud member of the U. S. Navy, I flew in the F-4 Phantom II fighter jet, stationed on an aircraft carrier. On a reconnaissance mission over North Vietnam, ten miles from the coast and heading toward the Gulf of Tonkin, our Navy F-4 Phantom took a direct hit in the front end of the plane. The cockpit immediately filled with smoke and to clear it John, the pilot who was in the front seat, blew his canopy off. Flying at 500 miles per hour, that did it for any further communication between us. Our wing man said over the radio that there was a lot of fire under the cockpit and was yelling at us to eject. A few minutes later there was a large “boom.” I looked up and John had punched out. My next decision was clear and immediate! While sitting in my raft among the islands off the Northern Coast of Vietnam, my concern was the possibility of being captured by the inhabitants on a nearby beach. I remember thinking that stressing out about anything other than the moment would be completely irrelevant. Fortunately, a major rescue effort was launched, and an hour later, we were in a “helo” headed back to the carrier.The missions we flew were focused on risk assessment, and that is a concept (reality) I have both experienced and have practiced throughout my institutional investment consulting career. My current focus and real passion is assisting endowments, foundations, insurance companies and corporations in assessing their investments. My goal for our clients is to facilitate a complete understanding of their return/risk criteria through unique asset allocation strategies, while providing clarity of portfolio performance.I am in the process of expanding my LinkedIn connections with insitutional decision makers and former members of the United States Armed Services.
