Amazingly, I have spent over 22 years in school. As Paul Simon sang, "It's a wonder I can think at all!" I finally managed to get a M.S. from Illinois Institute of Technology (I.I.T.). in 1985 that is the equivalent of a Ph.D. in chemistry not only because of I.I.T.'s rigor but because I completed all but the "defense of thesis" for the Ph.D. I could not stay at I.I.T. to finish the Ph.D. because my graduate fellowship expired and I could not afford to pay tuition. I was already maxed out with student loans.Science is the key. Everyone should have a good science education. Mathematics too. How can people stand to live without a knowledge of what makes a light bulb glow or an automobile engine run? How can they claim to be literate if they do not understand the difficulties with huge or very small numbers? What a deficient education it is that neglects probability and basic statistics! Nevermind general relativity theory or quantum mechanics. People need to know basic stuff like what an acid or base is or how genetic information is stored as DNA. It's fundamental material and we cannot be an informed electorate without this knowledge.I have a liberal arts undergraduate degree. To me, a liberal arts education is "de rigour" for any professional. It not only broadens one's horizons, but it teaches how to think. It teaches the habit of actually thinking, indeed.
